The problem

Course delivery happened over messaging apps and shared drives. There was no enrolment record, no way to confirm that a learner had completed anything, and certificates were produced by hand ‚Äî which makes them impossible for an employer to verify.

What was needed

A platform that sells a course, delivers it securely, tracks progress honestly, and issues a certificate that a third party can check.

What I built

A learning platform in two halves. An API and administrative back office own courses, lessons, enrolments, quiz attempts and certificates; a separate frontend delivers the public site, the catalogue and the learner dashboard. Lesson media is served through the application rather than exposed as public files, so access follows enrolment. Certificates carry a public verification page, which is the part that makes them worth anything.

Technical challenges

Running inside a free cloud allowance, deliberately

The API runs on an ARM cloud instance with the database and cache on the same host, sized to stay inside a free allowance. That is a real constraint, not a temporary one: it shaped the decision to keep PostgreSQL and Redis local to the instance rather than paying for managed services the project does not yet need, and to keep the deployment a plain, reproducible release directory rather than a container platform.

Two origins, one session

The frontend and the API are deployed separately, which breaks cookie-based sessions until both are served from the same parent domain. Rather than weakening the session or bolting on token storage in the browser, the cutover to the apex domain is treated as a launch prerequisite and documented as one.

Uploads are not code

Course thumbnails and awarding-body artwork live in storage, not in the repository, so they do not travel with a deployment. The release runbook names them explicitly as a step, because the failure mode ‚Äî a correct deployment with missing images ‚Äî looks like a bug and is not one.

Architecture

A PHP API with an administrative panel runs on a cloud instance alongside PostgreSQL and Redis. A Next.js frontend is deployed separately and talks to the API over HTTPS. Sessions are cookie-based, which is why both halves must share a parent domain in production.

Outcome

The API is deployed and serving, with the schema migrated and the admin panel in use. Catalogue content and the domain cutover are the remaining work before public launch.
